We often see metal plugs, nylon plugs and even all-metal waterproof connectors. What are the advantages and disadvantages of metal and nylon, and how to choose a suitable waterproof connector for our own products?
1. Mechanical life
The mechanical life of the waterproof connector refers to the life of the number of times of plugging and unplugging, and the industry standard is usually specified as 1000 to 1500 times. Before reaching the specified mechanical life, the contact resistance, insulation resistance and withstand voltage of the waterproof connector should not exceed the specified standard values, which is not much different from the metal shell and the nylon shell.
2. Electrical properties
Rated current, contact resistance, rated voltage, insulation resistance and other specified standard values, the metal is consistent with nylon.
3. Environmental parameters
Environmental parameters mainly include ambient temperature, humidity, signal interference, sudden temperature change, atmospheric pressure, and corrosive environment. The environment in which the waterproof connector is used, stored, and transported has a significant impact on its performance. In this regard, the metal shell has better stability than the nylon shell.
4. Termination method
The termination method refers to the connection method between the hardware contacts of the male and female connectors of the waterproof connector and the wires and cables. There is no discernible difference between metal and nylon housings.
5. Price
The metal part of the waterproof connector shell is generally made of copper or aluminum, and the surface can be brightened by nickel plating or oxidized and blackened according to the needs. The price of the metal shell is definitely better than that of the nylon shell.
The main advantage of the metal shell is reflected in the environmental parameters. If the signal needs to be shielded or the use environment is harsh, it is recommended to use the metal shell, and it is better to use the nylon shell in other environments.
